Who covers the place when you are away?
Who takes care of the place when you are away? Make a coverage card before you need one.
Ask before assigning
Choose one routine that needs attention during an absence. Describe what is involved and ask a person whether they are willing and available to cover it. Give them a chance to decline or limit what they can do. A household member’s proximity is not consent. Record the agreed scope rather than assuming that one yes covers every future trip.
Build a private coverage card
Use four headings: task, timing, agreed backup, and instruction location. Add a last-reviewed date so the reader can identify the current version. Keep contact numbers and access information in an appropriate private channel. A public demonstration should use blank fields. Do not film keys, entry codes, addresses, or documents containing other people’s information.
Walk through the actual routine
Show the willing backup what is covered and where the relevant instructions are kept. Ask them to describe the handoff back to you and point out anything unclear. Agree on what to do if they cannot attend. If animals are present, have species- and animal-appropriate care directions reviewed with the relevant professional; this general card supplies no feeding, treatment, or medical instructions.
Confirm again before the absence
Check availability, instructions, and any changed circumstances before relying on the arrangement. Write down who needs to know if the backup becomes unavailable. Keep urgent contacts and the limits of the person’s responsibility clear in private instructions. The result is a confirmed handoff, not a guarantee that every event is covered. Start with one task and improve the card after a practice walkthrough.
