Define the job before choosing the tool

A tool recommendation cannot define the job for you.

Name the job in plain language

Describe what you are trying to understand or accomplish before comparing tools. Keep the task specific enough that a relevant instruction or source could address it. This brief does not provide a repair procedure or recommend equipment for an unverified situation.

List availability separately

Record what you own, what might be borrowed with permission, and what is unverified. Do not infer suitability from possession or a product image. An owner can decline a request, and a listed item may still require guidance before its intended use can be considered.

Find the instruction dependency

Write the exact item or method and the relevant manual or source needed. Keep questions you cannot answer visible. Seek an appropriate qualified source when required by the task. Do not turn an informal planning worksheet into a substitute for instructions.

Choose the next investigation

Clarify one requirement before buying or borrowing. A notebook and a plain task description are enough for this step. Record what information would change the comparison, and keep any cost estimate separate from a current quote or purchase decision.

Optional planning supplies

Start with paper, a pencil, and anything you already own. A notebook or binder can help keep observations, source links, and household project questions together.
