Separate a quote from a spending decision
A quote is information, not a spending decision.
Identify what the number describes
Record the exact item or service, quantity, source, and quote date. Keep an estimate labeled as an estimate and an actual receipt separate from either. Do not make a comparison look complete by assigning numbers to costs you have not checked.
Keep missing costs visible
List delivery, recurring, or other relevant costs as confirmed or unresolved. Record the source of any answer. A quote that omits a question should not silently be treated as a full total. This page is an organizational aid, not a price claim about a product.
Connect the quote to the task
Keep the intended job, permission, and relevant guidance beside the number. A lower-looking figure does not settle whether the option fits the actual situation. Compare like descriptions and quantities when you have verified information, and label differences clearly.
Leave the decision separate
Choose one cost or scope question to clarify before committing. You can keep researching or leave an unstarted purchase undecided. No universal savings claim follows from filling in a quote record. Use existing paper or a shared file to keep the evidence accessible.
Bring this checklist
- Define the specific task or question.
- Keep permission, guidance and unknowns visible.
- Record source/date and verified costs when relevant.
- Ask before assigning follow-up or changing shared space.
Optional planning supplies
Start with paper, a pencil, and anything you already own. A notebook or binder can help keep observations, source links, and household project questions together.
