Review decisions before claiming savings
Before calling a decision a saving, separate what you can support.
Keep four different kinds of information
Label columns Actual spending, Dated quotes, Planning estimates, and Unknowns. Place a figure only where its basis belongs. If you do not have a verified amount or relevant record, leave the entry unknown rather than filling in a plausible number.
Preserve the context
Keep the item or task, date, scope, and source with each figure. A quote records an offer in its stated context; it does not establish what was purchased. An estimate is a planning assumption, and a receipt alone does not explain the value of the decision.
Review the claim before sharing
Ask what statement the available records actually support. Choosing not to pursue a proposal is not automatically a measured saving. Avoid totals that mix estimates and actual spending without explanation. This is a recordkeeping prompt, not a calculation of household savings.
Choose the next answer
Name the uncertainty that matters for the decision and the source you would check. A useful review can end with a clearer question instead of a financial claim. Keep private receipts and identifying information out of public posts and comments.
Bring this checklist
- Name one task and the question it raises.
- Keep sources, dates, scope and unknowns visible.
- Separate proposals from actual agreements.
- Choose a willing next check; keep private details private.
